2024 Mission Preview

It’s the morning of Tuesday, August 6. We race in Mission, British Columbia this weekend. It’s the beginning of a busy seven-week stretch that, frankly, has me a bit nervous for the time and energy its going to consume. Plus wear and tear on the car.

Specific to Mission this weekend, the do not allow live-streaming. I don’t know why and will certainly comply…and also inquire.

The good news about this is that I’ll record sessions in 4k, which I can’t do when live-streaming, so the edited videos will be sharp.

After some encouragement from Rod “The Oracle” Duncan, we’re going to drive up early on Friday (it’s a shorter drive for us than to Portland), and take advantage of the affordable, optional practice day on Friday. It’s a new track for me, so some familiarity prior to Saturday will be great. At 1.4 miles, with nine turns, including three hairpins, and short straights, Mission sounds like Waterford Hills, where I attended race school in 2022 and raced (in a Sport Renault) in 2023. It’s going to be great fun!

Here is the schedule for the weekend. We’re going to be busy! And yes, we’re doing a Le Mans-style start for our SMC race on Saturday evening. The car shouldn’t be hot, so the no-start problem shouldn’t be…plus I added insulation to the exhaust manifold and carb float bowls.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention…there was a major landslide about 175 miles north of the track a week ago. It completely blocked a major river that feeds into the Fraser River, which runs right next to the track. There was a considerable amount of concern that the 100 foot deep, 2000 foot long slide-dam would fail catastrophically, sending a torrent of water that had built up behind it downriver, threatening people, homes, towns, and the track. Fortunately for everyone downstream, the water over-topped the dam Monday morning and seems to be releasing relatively slowly.
